Site Review : UnlockToTalk.com

I don’t typically do a review of a website or use internet services like this, but since I recently used this then I felt I needed to make a review about it.

I always do a whois check of websites BEFORE I use their service especially if I’ve never been there. I noticed they had the Go Daddy badge on site so I decided to look up their whois on Go Daddy’s whois system. And as far as that went it looked safe so I decided to proceed in using their services. Well, I didn’t actually needed their services but rather it was my friend because they needed to unlock 2 Blackberries so that they can use it with other networks (especially one of those were locked to a European network).

So we went on in providing the necessary information on the form and went through the first phone. Then on the checkout, I noticed they had the PayPal option so I decided to use it. So I checked out with PayPal and proceeded with standard procedures.

FRAUD TIP — PayPal Payments

If you are paying something online and will be using PayPal, be sure you do a simple check if you actually are on the PayPal website you are supposed to be in.

First of all check the URL. It should be using the HTTPS protocol and is clearly a paypal domain (paypal.com, paypal.ca, etc…) it it isn’t or it looks suspicious then probably it isn’t really the paypal site. The next step is a way to check if you actually are in a PayPal site. Although, you should do it every time you do a paypal payment to make sure you are on the real site.

A simple check you can do is logging in using a fake account, it should be something that shouldn’t exist at all. Just make up an email login and a password for it (NO, don’t create an account, just login directly with that none existent account). If you were able to login, then it means that you are on a FAKE PayPal site. After “login”, it would probably ask for you name and whatever. IT SHOULDN’T. Just go away and never go back.

Ok, so it didn’t accept that account you just made up, so now try logging in with your account but this time use a wrong password. If it accepted that, then you already know what to do.

So, finally if it didn’t accept that then most probably you are on the legit PayPal site. You can now proceed in logging in with your account and proceed with your payment.

After the payment, I was brought to this page where I needed to verify the payment semi-personally. So I had to select the US-CANADA option where it will call YOUR phone number then you will verify the payment through phone (just simple voice command with a computer). If verification is successful, it will tell you that then you could just hang up. Then within 5 minutes it should be able to send you the unlock code you need (some need to be manually generated but some are fully automated, please check the description of it’s same day or within certain hours of the day and week).

All confirmations are sent over email. Also, if you need help or had a problem (like the unlock code wasn’t accepted) you should contact them right away through email. Just reply to the last email they sent you (and include their email as an inline response) and they should be able to assist you from there. We had to get help from them because the EU Blackberry we had was not able to get unlocked. So we had to get help FAST. And they were nice enough to assist us. But just a warning, the chat assistance can be quite rude. When we did our EU phone transaction, we got a bit excited and clicked the chat button to get assistance from them and tol them we haven’t received the unlock code yet. And what the rep told us was a very helpful “your kidding me, your transaction was just under 5 minutes! your just delaying your code by asking it from us this early” //end sarcasm

So yeah. They should have at least been nice and told us “You’re transaction was just within 5 minutes ago. Please allow us up to 24 hours (maybe) to process your request before requesting assistance.” At least that was much better and reassuring. It was a very bad experience. Despite that, at least the email help was fine.

And that ends my review. To conclude, we were able to unlock the phones and I guess the payment was worth the hassle of unlocking it yourself using some weird software hardware contraptions. Especially if you’re doing it just once (or twice)
